Woodturning I: Spindle Series
➔ Thursdays, Feb 19 - Mar 5th | 9am-12pm
This three-session beginner series focuses on spindle turning, with an emphasis on tool control and developing good habits at the lathe. Spindle projects may include spinning tops, candle sticks, stool legs, boxes, & vases. Taught by Lacey Spray.

There are countless projects at your fingertips in the woodshop, but sometimes we don’t know where to start. In this 3-hour class, we’ll teach safe operation of many of the shop’s most powerful tools, and then you’ll be free to get creative. Projects may require Open Shop attendance to finish. Bladesmithing I: Letter Opener

No prior blacksmithing required! You can expect to learn proper safety considerations, body mechanics, and the working properties of hot steel. You will also learn hammer techniques and forging a point and bevels of a blade. We’ll cover basic grinding techniques, and create a decorative handle. Taught by Joe Vachon.

Woodturning II: Taming of the Skew

Learn to use the skew and get a beautiful surface while spindle turning, plus some other specific places to use it. This is a very useful precursor class to the Turn a Stool class in March. We will first make a test piece, then candlesticks. Taught by Marjin Wall.

Learn to make your own frames! This is a two-night class, focusing on the miter saw and table saw. This class will send you home with a handmade frame or two, and the skills to make more yourself. Taught by Jared Wolf.

Bandsaw: Make a Spurtle!
This class is no longer available. Contact us if you’d like us to host it in the future!
Cut and shape your own Spurtle—a beautiful multipurpose kitchen tool that blends the best of a spatula and a wooden spoon.
You’ll start with a hardwood blank and learn basic of cutting on the bandsaw, shaping techniques with belt sander and hand tools, drilling clean holes, and a little bit of leather work! Participants will make at least one, potentially up to three as time allows. Taught by Lacey Spray.

Learn to turn a platter! We will turn a platter first using a faceplate, then with the chuck in extension. If students don’t quite finish in class, the project can be completed during Sunday Open Shop. Taught by Marjin Wall.

Band Saw Sculpture: Animals

From Block to Beast! Transform a simple block of wood into a stylized crow—or choose another bird from provided templates—using the bandsaw and basic shaping techniques. You will have the option to add texture and character by sanding, burning, or even incorporating small details like feet or beaks using copper wire or brass. Work on your band saw mastery with this unique class! Taught by Lacey Spray.

Intro to Spoon Carving: Knife Skills

In this class we will discuss how to carve a wooden eating spoon from a tree. You’ll be provided a roughed-out spoon blank, with which we’ll learn knife grips, safety and carving techniques. This class will open up a new world of working with green wood and knives! Taught by Steven Antholis.

Mixed Media: Tapered Wooden Earrings

Create timeless tapered wood earrings using the bandsaw and a taper jig. You’ll also get a small introduction to silversmithing to incorporate metal hardware into your design. Go home with your own comfortable, timeless earrings that effortlessly elevate your look!
Each student can make 2-4 pairs of tapered wooden earrings with sterling silver hardware. Metalsmithing done separately, but included in price. Taught by Lacey Spray.

You will learn how to select and prepare the wood, mount it on the lathe, and use various tools to shape, sand, and finish your piece. Great for beginners or those who need a refresher. Artistic and playful work at the forge! Learn to sculpt a dragon’s head on the end of a bar of steel. Learn how to pre-form the head by hammer and anvil, chisel and fuller out the beard, ears, mouth and teeth; punch the eyes and nostrils, and form additional details that will bring it (and new possibilities in your work) to life. Taught by Joe Vachon.

Precision Marking Tools

Precise joinery requires precise measurement and marking. In this class we will use hardware kits to produce a marking knife and a marking gauge to be used in marking and layout for joinery. Taught by Eamon Stack.

This class series is for serious woodworkers! We’ll spend four evenings together, designing, building and finishing a furniture project of your choosing. Carving a Butter Spreader

You can have your butter and spread it too! Learn to carve a butter spreader from a tree! In this class we will discuss wood grain and orientation, why we carve with green wood, knife skills and design. Each student will get a roughed-out blank to carve their spreader from and be spreading in no time! Taught by Steven Antholis.

Intermediate Woodworking: Shop Stool
This class is no longer available. Contact us if you’d like us to host it in the future!
Take your skills to the next level with this Shop Stool! This project turns a single 2x10 into a classy stool with a foot rest. This stool is all glue joints, requires no fasteners, and leaves plenty of room for customization.
Legs are attached to the seat with mortise and tenon joints, and leg bracing can be accomplished with half-laps or mortise and tenon depending on maker preference and experience.
